SERB released the selection list for MATRICS 2025. 95 projects approved out of 870 applications. Offer letters emailed to PIs.

The Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) has released the selection list for MATRICS 2025. Out of 870 applications received, 95 projects have been approved for funding — a success rate of 10.9%.

For Selected PIs

  1. Offer letters emailed to PIs + host institute Registrar on registered email IDs.
  2. Sign and return the offer letter within 30 days (by 15 January 2026).
  3. Submit host institute undertaking + bank account details (PFMS-compliant).
  4. First installment (50%) released within 30 days of receiving signed offer + undertaking.
  5. Project must commence within 60 days of fund receipt.

For Non-Selected Applicants

  • Individual feedback NOT provided by SERB.
  • Can re-apply in next cycle (MATRICS 2026 — opens July 2026).
  • SERB also offers CRG (Core Research Grant), POWER, and other schemes for mathematical sciences researchers.

SERB MATRICS has an ~11% selection rate — writing a strong proposal is critical. This guide covers the prescribed format, content depth, evaluation criteria, and common reasons for rejection based on analysis of past successful and unsuccessful proposals.

📋 Prescribed Format (10 pages, A4, single spacing)

  • Font: Times New Roman, 11 pt
  • Margins: 1 inch all sides
  • Total length: 10 pages (excluding references)
  • File format: PDF, max 5 MB
  • Sections: 7 main sections

📝 Recommended Structure

1. Title + PI Details (Page 1, top)

  • Project title — concise, specific (< 15 words)
  • PI name, designation, institute, email
  • Co-PI (if any) — same details
  • Host institute + department
  • Total grant requested (Rs. 5,00,000)

2. Abstract (Half page, ~300 words)

  • 1-2 sentences: Research area
  • 2-3 sentences: Specific problem to address
  • 1-2 sentences: Proposed approach
  • 1-2 sentences: Expected outcomes (papers, theorems)

3. Background & Motivation (2 pages, ~800 words)

  • Introduce the broad area (e.g., 'Algebraic Geometry')
  • Discuss current state of art — cite 10-15 recent papers (last 5 years)
  • Identify specific research gap your work will fill
  • Justify why this gap matters (theoretical importance / applications)

Tip: Use precise mathematical language. Avoid 'interesting problem' — say 'an open question posed by Smith (2023) regarding the structure of...'.

4. Research Objectives (Half page, ~200 words)

  • 3-5 specific objectives, each starting with a mathematical verb: 'Prove', 'Characterise', 'Classify', 'Compute', 'Extend'
  • Each objective should be measurable (specific theorem/conjecture to be addressed)

Bad: 'Study algebraic varieties.'
Good: 'Classify smooth projective surfaces of general type with p_g = 0 over algebraically closed fields of characteristic p > 0.'

5. Methodology (3 pages, ~1200 words)

This is the heart of the proposal. For each objective:

  • State the precise problem
  • Outline the mathematical approach
  • Cite relevant prior techniques you'll build on
  • Indicate what's new in your approach
  • Discuss feasibility — preliminary results if any

For mathematical proposals, this section often includes:

  • Definition of the objects of study
  • Statement of conjectures/theorems you'll attempt
  • Outline of proof strategies
  • Computational tools required (if any) — Sage, Magma, GAP, etc.

6. Expected Outcomes (1 page, ~400 words)

  • 3-5 specific deliverables — theorems proved, classifications achieved, algorithms developed
  • Expected publications — list target journals (e.g., 'A paper in Journal of Algebra / Algebra & Number Theory / Transactions of AMS')
  • Broader impact — how the work advances the field
  • Future research directions enabled by this work

7. References (1-2 pages, ~25-40 references)

  • Mostly recent (last 5-10 years)
  • Include foundational papers (can be older)
  • Standard format (AMS / SIAM style)
  • Include DOIs / arXiv IDs where possible

✅ Evaluation Criteria (Weight)

  1. Originality & significance (30%): Is the problem important? Is the approach novel?
  2. Feasibility (25%): Can the PI realistically achieve the objectives in 3 years with Rs. 5 lakh?
  3. PI's track record (25%): Publications, prior grants, international recognition
  4. Methodology soundness (15%): Are the proof strategies / computational approaches sound?
  5. Clarity & presentation (5%): Well-structured, mathematically precise writing

💡 Tips for a Winning Proposal

  1. Pick a focused problem — not 'classification of algebraic varieties' but 'classification of Enriques surfaces over fields of characteristic 2'.
  2. Show your preliminary work — even partial results demonstrate capability.
  3. Cite recent international work — review committee looks for awareness of global research.
  4. Be honest about challenges — better to acknowledge a difficult step than oversimplify.
  5. Get feedback from a senior colleague — preferably someone who has reviewed for SERB/DST.
  6. Read 2-3 successful MATRICS proposals — some PIs share on personal websites / arXiv.

💰 Budget Guidelines (Rs. 5,00,000 over 3 years)

Recommended split:

  • Research consumables (books, software, small compute): Rs. 3,00,000
  • Conference travel (national/international): Rs. 1,00,000
  • Field work / minor equipment: Rs. 1,00,000

Note: No salary component allowed in MATRICS (unlike other SERB schemes). PI's regular salary covers their time.
