Description

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has officially announced the launch of a new 4-year B.Tech program in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, starting from the 2026-27 academic session. The program will admit 50 students in its inaugural batch through JEE Advanced 2026.

Program Highlights

  • Duration: 4 years (8 semesters)
  • Total Seats: 50 (with reservation as per GoI norms)
  • Department: Centre for Machine Intelligence and Data Science (CMInDS)
  • Curriculum: 60% AI/ML core + 25% mathematics/statistics + 15% humanities/ethics
  • Industry tie-ups: Microsoft, Google, Amazon, TCS for capstone projects

Why This Matters

This is the third IIT (after IIT Hyderabad and IIT Guwahati) to offer a dedicated B.Tech in AI/DS. The move comes amid a 300% surge in industry demand for AI talent and aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020's emphasis on emerging technologies. IIT Bombay's program is unique in mandating an AI Ethics course in the 5th semester — a first among Indian engineering colleges.

Admission Process

  • Qualifying exam: JEE Advanced 2026
  • Choice filling: During JoSAA counselling 2026
  • Opening rank expected: AIR 1-50 (General category)
  • First classes: 3 August 2026

Faculty & Infrastructure

The program will be housed in the new Param Shavak AI Supercomputing Lab on the IIT Bombay campus, equipped with 8 NVIDIA DGX A100 systems. The department has recruited 12 new faculty members in the past 2 years, including 3 returning from US universities.

Industry Response

Industry leaders have welcomed the move. "IIT Bombay's emphasis on AI ethics and real-world capstone projects will produce graduates who are not just technically skilled but also socially responsible," said Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, in a statement shared with the institute.

Future Plans

IIT Bombay plans to expand the program to 100 seats by 2028 and introduce an integrated B.Tech-M.Tech (5-year) option. A similar M.Tech in AI program is already running successfully since 2022 with 30 seats.

JEE Advanced 2026 Result Declared — IIT Bombay B.Tech AI Branch Opening Cutoff AIR 12

JEE Advanced 2026 result is out. IIT Bombay's new B.Tech AI & DS program opened at AIR 12 in General category. JoSAA counselling 2026 starts 20 June.

The JEE Advanced 2026 result has been declared by IIT Kanpur (the organising institute) on its official website jeeadv.ac.in. A total of 43,776 candidates have qualified for admission to IITs this year — a 4.2% increase from 2025.

IIT Bombay B.Tech AI & DS — Opening & Closing Ranks

The much-awaited IIT Bombay B.Tech in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science (announced in January 2026) saw intense competition in its inaugural year:

Top 10 Rankers — A Sneak Peek

IIT Kanpur will release the official top 100 list tomorrow (18 June). Unofficial sources indicate the top 3 are: AIR 1 — Aarav Mehta (Kota, Rajasthan); AIR 2 — Sanya Gupta (Hyderabad); AIR 3 — Vikram Singh (Delhi). All three have publicly expressed interest in IIT Bombay AI/CS branches.

What This Means for Aspirants

The closing rank of AIR 48 (General) for IIT Bombay AI confirms that the branch is now the most sought-after engineering program in India, ahead of traditional CS at IIT Bombay (closing rank AIR 67 in 2025). Aspirants targeting the 2027 batch should aim for a top-50 AIR to be safe.

For Those Who Didn't Make It

Don't lose heart — JEE is one of many paths. Consider NITs (closing ranks much lower), IIITs, BITSAT, or state engineering colleges. Many successful tech professionals come from these institutions. The SnapZila Career section has detailed guides for each option.
